Angry Birds Rio Coming to Android Exclusively Through Amazon App Store

Mar 14, 2011 12:00 PM EDT by Kenneth Butler, LAPTOP Web Producer/Writer

Get your slingshot finger ready!  Angry Birds Rio, an installment of the popular Angry Birds game that doubles as a promotional tie-in to the upcoming animated movie Rio, will be landing on Android smart phones sometime soon, according to Rovio. If you’re a fan of those grumpy fliers, you may expect to find the game in the familiar Android Market, but instead, this download will be served exclusively within the Amazon App Store.

That’s not all you’ll find in Amazon’s alternative app seller either. The Amazon App Store will also feature ad-free, paid versions of the original Angry Birds game as well as its timely spin-off Angry Birds Seasons. (It’s important to note that ad-free versions of either app were never offered within the Android Market.)

Because Android is an open platform, anyone can create a marketplace for digital downloads, but until now, no third-party app store has exclusively offered applications with such a wide appeal. The question is: will Angry Bird fans find their way to these games when the Amazon App Store is made available at some unrevealed future date? We’ll have to wait and see.
