Android Market Share Doubles, May Soon Overtake Palm

comScore recently released their report on mobile subscriber market share and it included a juicy little tidbit concerning a certain mobile phone OS from Google. Android’s market share more than doubled between September and December of last year, going from 2.5% to 5.2%.

This still leaves Android behind everyone else — Palm, Microsoft, Apple and RIM, in ascending order — yet the OS made gains where most other platforms lost. Palm is down 2.2 points, and Microsoft and RIM are both down 1.1 points. Only Apple made gains, but just 1.2 points, less than half of Android’s.

Palm’s market share was only 6.1% at the end of December. If Android’s growth continues apace, they may overtake Palm this quarter. Of course there’s still a long way to go before Google catches up to Microsoft and Apple. But that jump corresponds to the release of the Motorola Droid, which has enjoyed continual popularity since its release in October. Now with the Nexus One in the mix and the Motorola Devour on the horizon, consumers have many more Android choices than they had even 6 months ago.

How long before reports that Microsoft is on the ropes surface? Place your bets now.
