Android 2.2 Coming to Galaxy S Phones In September… For Now

We’ve got high hopes for this one, but considering Samsung’s track record for missing deadlines regarding updates to their Android devices (they’re not alone- Motorola my Cliq is still waiting!), well take this with a grain of salt.  According to the company’s official Twitter page, Android Froyo (version 2.2) is coming to all Galaxy S phones at the end of September.  If they can deliver, Vibrant and Captivate owners are in for a treat indeed.  Here’s what they posted:

“We’ve seen a lot of Q’s about the Froyo update; it’s currently in development & will be released for all networks at the end of September.”

Android Froyo brings a number of enhancements over Eclair  including cloud computing capabilities that assist in backing up application data (a godsend when moving to a new Android device), Flash 10.1 (take that iPhone 4), faster Java performance which greatly enhances the web browser’s speed, an overhauled Android Market, and more. We’re really hoping that T-Mobile will leave Android Froyo’s Wi-Fi hotspot capability intact for the Vibrant, though we can almost certainly say this feature will be blocked for the AT&T Captivate.  The countdown is officially on, and September can’t get here fast enough.
