Amazon Kindle To Recieve Automatic Update. What Can We Expect?

February 14th, 2008 by Joanna Stern

Kensington Focused on Notebook Cases for WomenI got an email from the Amazon Kindle team this morning. They forgot to wish me a happy Valentine’s Day, but they did release news that my Kindle will be getting a software update sometime soon:

“We’re writing to let you know about an upcoming software release that will be automatically delivered to your Kindle over Whispernet. The next release roll out will commence on Friday, February 15th and you should receive the update sometime in the days following. “

As long as the power and wireless switches on the Kindle are powered on and it has a wireless signal, the Kindle will automatically download the 1.0.4 version update. I have had my Kindle on all morning and have gotten no update yet. I have even put the Kindle to sleep a number of times to initiate an update, like Amazon instructs. Anyone else worried that if you keep your Kindle and its wireless on that the battery will be dead by the time the update comes through?

I was eager to see what the software update would add so I tried to manually load on the new Kindle 1.0.4 version of the software through the Kindle support site. I downloaded the software to my PC and dragged it to the Kindle via USB but after a few minutes the installation process aborted. According to Amazon’s customer support the software file may not be quite ready yet and will be available in a few hours.

In the meantime, we will wait and ponder what the Kindle new update might provide? Magical software that could fix the frustrating Next Page buttons, which I mistakenly hit all the time!?!

The new version of the Kindle software will include overall improvements to the performance of the eBook and new screen savers, the letter noted. What are you hoping for?

We will report back when our Kindle finally updates…

The note says “release roll out will commence on Friday, February 15th” and you are surprised yours hasn’t updated by the posting date of February 14th?

Hmmm, what’s wrong with this picture….
Let me give you a hint: Do you understand cardinal numbers?

Not surprised that the software isn’t going out over the air yet. But surprised that Amazon posted the software to http://www.amazon.com/kindlesoftwareupdates for download and that doesn’t work….

You can download and install it today. I have done so and so have some others on the Amazon Kindle boards. Go to http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=200226050 and follow instructions for a manual install.

No big improvements that I have seen so far. One user called Amazon CS and they gave him a list of upgrades, most seem to involve experimental elements. List is in this thread: http://www.amazon.com/Kindle-1-0-4/forum/FxBVKST06PWP9B/Tx1AUEG3TN059YA/1/ref=cm_cd_ef_tft_tp?%5Fencoding=UTF8&cdAnchor=B000FI73MA&asin=B000FI73MA

Hey, Fritz the Cat, before you unleash your unhelpful and snide comments, take a minute or two to use search or read current tech news. I will follow your lead by offering an unsolicited observation: the reason you are so miserable is attributable to your lack friends and what anyone would consider a life. My hint is to try to get both, but I don’t think it’s possible for you. Cheers.

I really hope the new update will fix NowNow so that people will stop asking customer service questions. We can’t answer them. We can’t even tell people we can’t answer them. Amazon is dumb for not realizing this. There are 1200 questions in our backlog, most of them Kindle-related, and there’s no option to filter or sort, so NowNow questions just don’t get answered quickly anymore.

wow, laptopmag.com reader, you say i have no life, yet you attack me in a public forum?
No wonder you have no life. write back when you get out of middle school.
