Airlines Offer In-Flight Facebook for Free

Feb 1, 2011 11:13 AM EDT by Anna Attkisson, LAPTOP Managing Editor

You can’t check a bag for free, but you can check your friends’ status updates, at least during February. For the shortest month of the year, eight airlines are offering Facebook access for free during North American flights. The participating airlines include for AirTran, Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Delta, United Airlines, US Airways, and Virgin America.

Facebook is the most-visited site via Gogo, which serves 1,100 commercial aircraft (or about 3,800 flights a day), but e-mail is the most used service. And if you want to check e-mail it will cost you between $4.95 and $12.95. Currently, 7 to 10 percent of passengers take advantage of in-flight Wi-Fi, according to In-Stat.
