Acer Iconia Smart Hands-On: Hi-Res Screen Meets Gorgeous UI

Now, this is a super phone! Acer’s 4.8-inch Iconia Smart is the largest handset since the Dell Streak 5, and it takes full advantage of the added screen size with a whopping 1024 x 480 screen resolution. That’s the highest resolution we’ve seen on any Android phone, a welcome change from the seemingly endless array of 800 x 480 resolution phones on the market. The Iconia Smart also features a 1-GHz Qualcomm CPU, front and rear facing cameras (2-MP and 8-MP),  512MB of RAM, and 8GB of internal storage, which is expandable by microSD.

The Iconia Smart runs on Android 2.3, but it has some really neat Acer customizations. During our brief hands-on time we noted that the bottom row of icons looks a lot more attractive than stock gingerbread and, instead of having a dedicated apps button, the button menu slides up to reveal the apps list. Desktop widgets include a flippable list of recently visited web pages, another list of recently visited photos, and a feed widget that uses Acer’s Social Jogger.

Speaking of Social Jogger, Acer has included its unique and compelling social feeds app on the Iconia Smart and, as you’ll see in the video below, it is a pretty slick feed organizer that lets you see different types of updates. It also has Acer’s Clear.Fi software for sharing media amongst devices.

Obviously, the Iconia Smart isn’t the lightest phone you’ll find, weighing in at 6.5 ounces, nor the smallest, with its 5.5 x 2.5 x 0.5 inch dimensions. Its metallic edges are fairly attractive, but won’t win any design awards. The buttons on the bottom also seemed quite stiff in Acer’s booth, as we often had to push the home button multiple times to see a response.

That said, the real star of the show here is the Iconia Smart’s spacious 1024 x 480 screen. Considering that most desktop web pages are designed for a 1024 wide display, the Iconia Smart should provide a compromise-free web surfing experience that thus far has only existed on 7-inch and larger tablets.

We hear the Iconia Smart will hit the U.S. market sometime this spring. We had a brief opportunity to go hands-on with the Acer Iconia Smart here at Mobile World Congress. Check out the video below to get a closer look at this groundbreaking handset.
