Acer Aspire 8940G: A Powerful Notebook For Power Users

November 24th, 2009 by K. T. Bradford

Lately the notebooks that have gotten the most attention around here are the ones that offer the most portability. Thin, light systems either in netbook form or ultraportables with ultra low voltage processors. It’s easy to forget that many consumers may not need something light with an average performance score. They need a powerhouse with a big screen and a blazing processor and a graphics card that delivers. And, if it’s not too much trouble, it would be nice to get something like that for under $1,500.

I’m not even talking just gamers — creative professionals, video editors, media connoisseurs. If you fit into that description, then we have the notebook for you.

Meet the Acer Aspire 8940G, a quad-core packing performance machine. This 18.4-inch system boasts a full HD, 1920 x 1080 LED-backlit display, speakers that put all others to shame, and a few test scores that rival the top dog Toshiba Qosmio X505.

The discrete Nvidia GeForce GTS 250M graphics offer a lot of punch, but the 8940G doesn’t quite live up to notebooks made for gaming. Still, if you need to mix a little play with your work, you’ll get decent frame rates for satisfying gameplay in a lot of titles.

Check the review for the full story. We were definitely impressed with this machine. And at $1,349 it is a seriously good deal.
