5 Tips To Extend Your BlackBerry’s Battery Life

Dec 14, 2010 10:00 AM EDT by Kenneth Butler, LAPTOP Web Producer/Writer

Although BlackBerrys aren’t generally known for being battery hogs, a few errant settings and you’ll find your battery draining faster than you’d like. Thankfully, keeping your BlackBerry alive throughout e-mails, schedule changes, phone calls and BBM messages is a breeze with these tips.

1. Turn off Bluetooth.

Unless you’ve got a headset on right now, turn off this power-sucking connection. Go to Options > Manage Connections > Bluetooth.

2. Stop button sounds.

Keytones, the comforting confirmation sounds your BlackBerry makes when you push a button, are a hidden power suck. Turn these off unless you’re really concerned about missing a letter. Options > Screen/Keyboard > Key Tone.

3. Tell GPS to get lost.

Location-based services are fun, but not always necessary, and they’re definitely battery hogs. Turn off GPS: Options > Advanced Options > GPS > Location OFF Special Features.

4. Let your BlackBerry get some shut-eye.

Do you really need to be reachable at 3:30 a.m.? Set your BlackBerry to turn off at night and back on in the morning, saving precious juice as it sleeps. Go to Options > Auto On/Off.

5. Animations are for cartoons.

The more you allow a website’s animations to play, the more power you waste. Set animations to repeat only once, or maybe never. In the browser, hit Menu and select Options > General Properties, then select Never, Once, or 10 Times. Just don’t leave it on 100 Times.
