11.6-Inch Acer Aspire One A0751h Headed to U.S. in Coming Weeks
June 10th, 2009 by Joanna Stern
Though there may appear to be reports that Acer is planning on pulling back its 11.6 Inch Aspire One for a of its new Timeline series, the company has confirmed that the larger than average 10-inch netbook will be available for purchase in the U.S. before the end of the month. According to Acer, the 11.6-inch Aspire one is available at WalMart now (though it is not listed on Walmart.com). It will also be sold at Amazon, Target.com, Shopko and Office Max starting on June 14, RadioShack on June 15, J&R and PC Richard on June 21 and Staples on June 28. Digitimes is reporting that the Taiwense company is planning an 11.6-inch machine in its Timeline series that will replace the A0751h or “establish a clear boundary between the two product lines.” Either way, while we haven’t reviewed the 11.6 system yet, it would make sense to replace the sluggish 1.2 GHz Atom Z520 CPU replaced with an Intel N Series Atom or CULV processor. While Acer would not comment on unnanounced products, a spokesperson told us that “the Aspire One and the Timeline Series are very different platforms. The Aspire One is a lightweight, mobile internet device, ideal for taking advantage of online applications such as e-mail, social networking, listening to online music, making online VoIP calls and web surfing. The Timeline Series is a notebook PC that offers enough power for not only online applications but also movies and productivity applications, such as spreadsheets, Word documents and presentations.”

Noticed a couple of issues in this post.
“it would make sense to replace the sluggish 1.2 GHz Atom Z520 CPU replaced with an Intel N Series Atom or CULV processor.”
Firstly, the Z520 is rated at 1.33ghz.
Secondly, INTEL does not sell the N series atom cpu’s to OEM’s using a display larger than 10″,- which is precisely the reason they’re using the Z520 in the first place. Using a CULV chipset/cpu would push the price up to where the machine wouldn’t be a netbook in the first place.
Other manufacturers are also coming out with 11,6″ netbooks using the same chipset/cpu as the 751 shortly.

I was in Walmart (store # 2633, Piscataway, NJ 08854) yesterday and saw a Walmart staff brought 3 in on the cart. To my surprise, on the package box it says it is loaded with “Windows Vista Basic”. The configuration is 2G RAM & 250G HD. I can’t believe it came with Vista, otherwise I would have bought one on the spot. Very disappointed!

Acer has made a tremendous step by being the cheapest small-laptop available in the market today. This coming new model will surely be anticipated by many people.

I just bought a 11.6-Inch Acer Aspire One A0751h with the 1.33ghz Atom Z520 CPU, 1 GB memory and a 160GB hard drive. I got them to throw in a 2GB memory card and it came to CAN$400. The video (1366 x 768 (WXGA)) is far better than the usual 10.1 inch 1024X600 netbook displays and the computer’s speed is not stunningly fast but is also not frustratingly slow. It does not have Bluetooth, 3G, HDMI. It does have WiFi b/g, an RJ45 port, SD card reader port, VGA out, and 3 USB 2.0 ports.
My impression is positive so far (two days of tinkering) although I am going to get a larger 6 cell or more battery. The standard 3 cell lasts 2 to 3 hours but I would like 6 to 8. One other note: the power supply remains cool! I am used to some being able to cook eggs. The computer itself does get a little warm but not hot like my old Pentium 4M laptop.
I would like to see applications built specifically for the netbook format that makes compensations for the smaller scree and lower CPU speeds and pay attention to power useage.

I forgot to add that it has pretty good sound and a Web cam as well as iPhone like gesture capability although I have no idea what I could use it with.
