10 Best Apps for Your New Tablet

Dec 17, 2012 04:59 PM EDT by Mark Spoonauer, LAPTOP Editor in Chief

A tablet that’s fresh out of the box is literally like a blank slate. Sure, you can use it to check email and surf the Web — but that’s all expected stuff. What about getting real work done? Or editing photos? Or staying up-to-date on all the latest news and your social networking feeds with a single app? The best tablet apps can also inspire you to do things like learn to cook or get organized. Here are 10 amazing apps that will help maximize your investment — and yourself.

Snapseed (Android, iPad)

Instagram junkies will love Snapseed, which lets you apply all sorts of fun filters to your photos with just a tap. Choices include Grunge, Drama and Vintage. But the real fun starts when you start taking advantage of Snapseed's adjustments and creative enhancements. You can tweak everything from white balance and saturation to brightness using your finger. Our favorite enhancement is center focus, which lets you blur the background around your subject. Snapseed gives you professional-level control without the steep learning curve. An Android version is now available.

Thank you for the great ideas, Mark. I got a new Nexus 7 at a Christmas party we had in my office at DISH last week. Now I am looking for a few good apps. I think that OfficePro HD will come in handy at work and Evernote looks like a useful app too. I would like to recommend #11 for your list. It’s called the DISH Remote Access app, and it streams live TV channels or recordings from my Hopper DVR to my tablet. It works anywhere I can get a good internet connection. I have secretly been using it to pass the time when things get a little slow around the office!

I prefer the Kindle Fire HD. The interface is amazing and it’s very easy to use. It’s a great combination of functional and simple. Check out its Amazon page(http://bit.ly/S1CzWe) if you want to compare what they bring to the table.
